Job Summary:

This individual will serve as the Life Support Specialist for one of our Aquatics Facilities, working in partnership with research staff members in the conduct of biomedical research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area. Cares for and maintains laboratory animals in accordance with Animal Welfare Act and the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, as well as, NIH policies and Guidelines and other pertinent regulations and policies.
  • Responsible for daily monitoring of all aquatic life support systems, tanks, racks, etc…
  • Responsible for scheduled periodic maintenance of all aquatic life support systems.
  • Responsible for performance of routine minor maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Manages daily activities of husbandry technicians with varying degrees of responsibility working in the CAF.
  • Performs health checks on animals and report any abnormalities to the attending veterinarian.
  • Assists with development of husbandry protocols as needed.
  • Maintains effective lines of communication with investigator regarding colony and support duties.
  • Actively interacts with customers as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance when applicable to job description.
  • Works with fellow employees to ensure that all work is performed according the task Statement of Work.

Qualifications:

Education: B.S. in Biological Sciences required.
Experience: Minimum two years experience working with large scale, recirculating aquatic animal life support systems required.
Certification/Licensure: Must be LATG certified within six months of eligibility.

Position: Diver

Facility: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

Job Summary:

Scuba dives in various park pools, exhibits and towers for cleaning and maintenance duties.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily, walk through park to inspect all pools and exhibit tanks. Assist in determining daily dives needed. Work with other depts. To facilitate dives in their areas.
  • Prepare diving equipment prior to all dives. Ensure that gear is in safe working condition and that SCUBA tanks are filled and operational. Maintain dive compressor.
  • Take on and off SCUBA gear including wetsuit, gloves, mask, fins, weight belt tanks, etc.
  • SCUBA dive up to 30-foot depths in varying temperature conditions. May include diving in pools and tanks containing both small and large exotic marine mammals.
  • Use scrub brushes, vacuum etc. to clean pools and exhibit tanks. Scr8ub algae and dirt off pool and tank sides and bottoms.
  • Perform minor underwater repairs or replacement of grates, etc. as needed.
  • While diving, monitor safety at all times. Monitor air levels in tanks at all times.
  • Dive into dark ozone towers to replace air stones or perform routine maintenance and repairs. Clean air stones with acid and rotate back into ozone towers.
  • Maintain dive log. Record dive times and lengths of dives. Report any problems with dives or pools to Sr. Diver or Supervisor.
  • During major water drops, keep pools and tanks pumped out and free of water. Prepare pools for water drops; plug drains , skimmer boxes, etc.
  • Maintain and clean valves at Bird Ponds.
  • Take dive equipment and tanks to SCUBA shops to be repaired and re-filled.
  • Assist with the transport of animals as assigned.
  • Report any animal behavioral or medical problems to the appropriate Manager immediately.
  • Assist in other Oceanarium areas as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must possess current SCUBA certification.
  • Prior dive experience beyond certification required.
  • Must possess the mental and physical capacities necessary to perform the job duties. Must possess strong swimming skills. Must be able to bend, kneel, pull oneself out of the pool, posses good manual dexterity, be able to lift up to 80 lbs and climb stair and ladders while in dive gear. Must possess good vision and hearing.
  • Must be willing and able to dive up to four hours per day in cold saltwater.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the use of basic hand tools.
  • Must be willing to work with and around hazardous chemicals.

The Life Support Systems Supervisor is responsible for all daily operations and maintenance of life support components and systems as well as supervising Life Support Systems Technicians.

The National Aquarium in Baltimore is looking for a nighttime Assistant Life Support Engineer to monitor and maintain water levels, back wash large sand filters and adjust air flow and ozone generators in the large exhibit systems as directed by the engineering staff. Hours are 11pm - 7 am, Monday- Friday.

Functions of the Assistant Life Support Engineer position include operating the life support systems for large aquarium exhibits, operating large sand filters, monitoring water levels and tank temperatures and performing water transfers. The Assistant Life Support Engineer will assist in inspection of ozone generators, preparation of artificial sea water and perform daily inspections and maintain daily documentation with guidance from the engineers.

Overview:

Client located in Central Houston area, is in need of a Life Support Systems Operator. This is a temp-to-hire position with possibility for overtime.

Life Support Systems Operator will be responsible for the daily operation on all life support systems and equipment, interface with aquarium and facilities staff regarding life support system adjustments and operation. Provide daily updates on system status and operation to Aquarium Curator and Director of Facilities.

Water Laboratory/Life Support Systems Technician

The Water Laboratory/LSS Technician is responsible for working closely with the Life Support Systems Manager and Water Laboratory Manager to ensure the quality of the water and proper operation of the closed system exhibit tanks within the Living Collections department.

Moody Gardens is looking for an ambitious team oriented person to join our life science and exhibit operations team as a life support systems operator. The successful candidate will possess a working knowledge of large and small-scale life support systems and demonstrate an interest in collaborative exhibit and collection management.

Life support systems operators are responsible for maintaining a collection of aquarium exhibits ranging from 100 gallons to 900,000 gallons showcasing invertebrates through mammals in both aquatic and marine environments. Previous professional experience with public aquarium life support systems is a plus. Work conditions include warm and cold, wet environments both inside and outside and require lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasionally working hours outside the normal scheduled times.

Specifically seeking individuals experienced in automated life support system operation and diagnostics with a working knowledge of automated control systems, component calibration and maintenance and rudimentary grasp of ladder logic programming.

The LSS operator position requires coverage 18 hours, 7 days a week. This requires the individual to be available for a variety of shifts and be flexible for shift changes when and if required. Must be flexible during holiday and vacation periods to fill required schedule. Must be available for overtime, both non-emergency and emergency situations, and be available 24 hours a day for some on-call work.
