Position:
Life Support Systems Manager

Description:

The Life Support Systems Manager oversees all aspects of life support operations and maintenance and supervises and trains the Life Support Systems staff. Successful candidates will aid the Director of Aquatics in developing and sustaining new life support systems for the World of Ecology aquatic exhibits, including a 188,000 gallon Kelp Forest tank as well as several smaller marine and freshwater exhibits.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement full life support system program, ensuring complete coordination and optimum scheduling of all life support operations.
  • Coordinate required daily inspections of all life support equipment for preventative maintenance as well as routine upkeep and repair of all faulty life support system components.
  • Design as necessary life support systems for temporary tanks or future additions.
  • Read and understand water chemistry reports and make recommendations for change as necessary.
  • Manage and maintain LSS logs and records.
  • Ensure that all life support staff works within safety policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and provide technical support to all life support staff using a team approach, effective two-way communication, and a collaborative spirit.
  • Organize necessary purchases within the budget.
  • Contribute to the mission of the California Science Center by stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning by creating fun, memorable experiences for the guests.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree with 5+ years experience in similar role, preferably at an AZA-accredited aquarium or comparable institution.
  • Experience designing, building, and running life support systems for marine and freshwater systems using various tools and components.
  • Experience in water quality testing and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of water chemistry.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium environment.
  • Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse and technical staff.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Strong technical writing skills, as well as effective oral communication essential.

Salary:

$55,000 to $65,000 per year with excellent benefits and 14 holidays per year

Position:
Water Lab Manager

Description:

The Water Lab Manager is responsible for ensuring the quality of the water biology and chemistry for a closed system of exhibit tanks within the Living Collections department, including a 188,000 gallon kelp forest exhibit as well as several smaller marine and freshwater tanks. Working closely with the Life Support Systems Manager and the Director of Aquatics, the Water Lab Manager will create and implement policies and procedures for maintaining the quality of the exhibit and holding tank water, including ozone, pH, and nitrogen levels. The Water Lab Manager will collect and analyze samples, record results, and make appropriate changes to procedures as necessary.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement full water quality testing, analysis, and control procedures for closed aquatic system with both freshwater and saltwater components.
  • Work closely with Life Support System Manager and Director of Aquatics to ensure complete coordination of life support system functions.
  • Closely monitor levels of various components, including ozone, pH, temperature, salinity, carbon dioxide, phosphates, chlorine, bromine, magnesium, strontium, dissolved organics, calcium, iodine, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, copper sulfate, ORP, alkalinity, and other biological and chemical levels for all exhibit and holding systems.
  • Perform microbiological examination of exhibit and holding tank waters including testing for coliform and total bacteria.
  • Routinely collect water samples, analyze using current and proven laboratory techniques, and record results.
  • • Under direction of Director of Aquatics, develop and maintain budget and inventory for laboratory operations.
  • Manage water disposal to sanitary sewer in accordance with local, State, and Federal regulations.
  • Assist Life Support Systems Manager with design, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of LSS and water treatment.
  • Manage and direct a diverse staff of employees and volunteers as well as participate in the selection and training of Water Lab staff.
  • Implement and monitor safety standards and procedures for the Water Lab.
  • Maintain current knowledge of techniques and equipment used in the field.
  • Interact and exchange information with other institutions and organizations
  • Contribute to the mission of the California Science Center Foundation by stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning by creating fun, memorable experiences for the guests.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 5+ years in similar position, preferably at an AZA-accredited aquarium or comparable institution, with a strong emphasis on closed marine and freshwater systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of water chemistry and biology.
  • Advanced knowledge of methods and procedures necessary for proper sampling and analysis of water quality.
  • Excellent laboratory skills, including ability to analyze data, prepare technical reports, and interpret and evaluate technical information.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills, as well as effective oral communication essential.
  • Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse and technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with various computer programs and software related to essential functions of position.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium environment.
  • Experience creating and maintaining budgets.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Salary:

$3,333-$4166 per month with excellent benefits and 14 holidays per year

Water Quality Technician

Description:

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium is seeking applications for a Water Quality Technician. In this role you will you will supervise and coordinate with the Assistant Water Quality Technicians, Water Quality Interns & volunteers, operating, maintaining, and monitoring the Aquarium’s Water Quality Laboratory and large scale Life Support Systems. The Water Quality Technician works with a diverse team in the development, implementation, and daily operation of Aquatic Health services, husbandry and process treatment for a wide variety of species. The Water Quality Technician will work interdependently with the general husbandry staff, facilities operations and other aquatic health staff in the development and implementation of best practices to ultimately yield the highest standard of aquatic animal care. This position will directly operate and maintain water quality equipment, help monitor staff activities and prioritize laboratory workloads.

To be considered for this position, the person should possess a Bachelors Degree, biology or chemistry preferred. Two years experience in water chemistry or water treatment field. The selected candidate will also have the ability to research and analyze various types of data information. Knowledge of Excel & Microsoft Access a plus.

Position:
Life Support Systems Technician
Audubon Zoo New Orleans, LA

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of and the ability to troubleshoot and repair the following: pumps, filters, chillers, ozone generating equipment, chlorine systems and biological filtration systems.  Expert plumbing skills are a must.
  • Maintain LSS logs and records as needed.
  • Understand/interpret water quality reports/results and ability to make recommendations and adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain excellent communication with sea lion trainers and supervisors, facility staff, outside contractors, consultants and senior staff.
  • Ability to operate power tools, fork lift, bobcat and backhoe.
  • Minimum of two years of applicable experience is required, preferably in a zoo or aquarium setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively use a personal computer.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, lift/carry 80lbs and complete other duties as assigned.
  • Must be available based on special needs/circumstances on a 24 hour basis.
