The Oregon Zoo’s Maintenance Team is hiring for an Aquatics Life Support Maintenance Worker. The LSS team is looking for new ways to conserve water and electricity by upgrading equipment and changing operational practices. The LSS team is responsible for the operation a number of fresh and saltwater systems that support marine mammals, elephants, cats, beaver/otters and a collection of fish and invertebrates. Functions & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on aquatic systems.
- Provide water quality testing and monitoring.
- Construct new aquatics systems and operations/functions involving mechanical, plumbing and piping as required to maintain Zoo operations.
- Collaborate with the Living Collections team to offer the highest level of care to our animals.
- Compiles data for reports on water quality, preventive maintenance or procedures. Assists the public, public officials and other employees in a professional and courteous manner.
- Performs or oversees the installs and repair of fixtures, cutting, gluing and the threading of pipe, bending pipe and testing valves and other equipment; cleans basins, skimmers and water and waste water plumbing, piping, filtration and mixing systems, and sterilization equipment, hydraulic systems, ozone generators, sand filters, fractionators.
- Consults with supervisors, vet staff and animal keepers as necessary to develop concepts, problem solve and determine the requirements of each job; prepares rough working drawings, estimates materials and parts needed, also works with animal keepers on animal care and guest service requirements.
- Communicates with zoo guests and others while working on jobs regarding projects and plans; provides directions and other information and performs guest service functions such as assisting lost children, missing persons or emergency services.

Job Requirements
Salary & Benefits
Salary: $31.97-38.85 per hour
The full-salary range for this position is step 1: $31.97 to step 5: $38.85 per hour. However, unless a candidate’s qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step 1: $31.97 to the equity range step 3: $35.25 per hour.
