The City of Virginia Beach Department of Museums invites your interest in the position of Exhibit Technician I for the Life Support section at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s Life Support Technician position is responsible for installation, operation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair tasks on aquatic animal life support systems and related components; operates and troubleshoots control systems and mechanical equipment (e.g., pumps, compressors, ozone generators, electric motors, filters, valves and valve actuators, foam fractionators, electrical & electromechanical controls etc.); interprets blueprints and equipment drawings; receives work order assignments from Facilities and Life Support Supervisor and senior staff by either oral or written instructions. Ensure that assigned tasks are accomplished and meet the quality standards. Participates in, and coordinates work involving facility preventative and corrective maintenance. Conducts and interprets water quality tests and analyzes data. Drives City vehicles to work related areas for field investigations and other local businesses and suppliers for correspondence and needed materials; generates work orders and daily log sheets in a neat and orderly fashion. Maintains equipment and system records and recommends replacement parts and materials. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers and customers.

Skills & Experience

Education & Experience

The ideal candidate will have a four-year college education with degree in aquarium science, aquaculture, commercial water treatment, engineering, or related field; or specialized training and/or certification in related trade. Experience in all major areas of aquatic life support work, involving the construction, repair, and preventive maintenance of life support systems; strong background in aquatic engineering field; SCUBA certified; AALSO Life Support Operator certification; experience working with pumps, filters, and other mechanical equipment; plumbing work experience; ability to recognize and solve problems; experience using Microsoft Office software applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Salary & Benefits
Salary: This position is classified as an Exhibits Technician I on the City’s pay plan. The salary range is $29,196.48 – $42,335.04. The City offers an excellent benefits package with includes health, dental, and life insurance; retirement and savings plans; holidays, paid time off; as well as access to the Beach Municipal Federal Credit Union, a non-profit service agency which is owned and operated exclusively for City employees and their dependents.
