Life Support and Animal Care Technician
Living Exhibits, Inc. designs, builds and maintains interactive animal exhibits for zoos, aquariums and museums across the country. Our exhibits include touch-tank marine aquatic exhibits featuring sharks and stingrays and are maintained and operated by Living Exhibits staff at a host zoological facility. The goals of these interactive exhibits are to increase the value of the guests’ experience, further our customers’ zoological mission and do so in a fiscally viable manner. Living Exhibits also maintains a year round holding facility in Wichita, Kansas where the Living Exhibits collection resides in winter months and is available for lease to other institutions during the year. All life support is maintained and operated at that facility by Living Exhibits staff.
Functions & Responsibilities
Perform daily life support and animal husbandry duties including, but not limited to:
o Cleaning and maintenance of animal exhibits;
o Operate and maintain life support equipment;
o Water chemistries and daily backwash routines
o Maintain records for feeding, health care, facility and life support operation;
Other Duties & Responsibilities
o Assist with Preparation of food and feeding of animals;
o Observation of animals for injuries, disease and behavioral changes;
o Necessary care and medical treatment of injured or sick animals;
Skills & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
Basic Knowledge of life support systems and operations;
Knowledge of electrical and plumbing for life support systems;
Basic knowledge of animals in collection, their care and general conservation issues.
Basic computer knowledge including email, word and excel
Education & Experience
Bachelors degree in zoology, animal husbandry or related field or working towards on OR equivalent experience experience;
One year practical experience working with aquatic life support systems;
Must be able to perform physical tasks including lifting of moderate to heavy loads (up to 60lbs), climbing ladders and ability to work in elevated conditions. Able to work in salt water and handle shell fish.
Work will be performed at our Regional Operations Center and our seasonal marine interactive exhibit at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Conditions may include outdoor work in all types of weather, working holidays and weekends and occasional evening event.
