The primary responsibility in this role is operating and maintaining a facility incorporating aquatic animal life support systems. Operating, preventative maintenance, routine maintenance, and emergency repairs on all dynamic water systems:
– Pool and Fountain Areas
– Life support equipment including pumps, filtration systems, valves, ozone generating systems, Ultra-violet light systems, heating and cooling systems, and water testing.
A plus if experience includes aquarium or zoo background and certified through Aquatic Animal Life Support Systems (AALSO). Familiar with Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards. You are an accountable team player that thrives in a fast-paced environment willing to be the subject matter expert that follows all safety procedures and/or assist with other projects as assigned.

Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Maintain life support systems. Responsible for back washing, servicing, and monitoring all water and life support systems.
• Troubleshoot and repair pumps, filters, chillers, ozone generating equipment, chlorine systems, UV light systems and biological filtration systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance on all systems.
• Document and keep accurate daily logs including the documentation of all maintenance and repairs of all equipment.
• Change filters sand, biological media, and ultra-violet light bulbs as required.
• Regularly clean and calibrate ORP probes.
• Understand and program all automated programming devices.
• Understand and interpret water quality reports/results and make recommendations for adjustments as needed.
• Understands and follows AZA standards.
• Knowledge of water quality parameters and how LSS equipment affects water quality.
• Follows and maintains all safety policies and procedures.
• Understands and follows all Standard Operating Procedures.
• Liaison with vendors.
• Liaison with Animal Programs department regarding any issues or concerns regarding animal health.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

• Must be available for disaster-response duties and responsibilities.

• Flexible schedule outside of typical working hours, with the ability and willingness to work occasional nights or weekends, as necessary?

Education & Experience

• Previous experience in general water chemistry is required.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
• Preferred a minimum of 2 years of experience in an aquarium or zoo is preferred.
• Preferred a minimum of 2 years’ experience in water filtration is required.

• Must be able to transverse zoo grounds and construction site on foot.
• Must be able to stoop, bend, lift, kneel, crawl, climb, jump, and carry objects for short distances.
• Must be able to lift overhead.
• Must be able to lift 75 lbs. without difficulty.
• Must be able to climb ladder and stairs.
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, rain and wind.
• Must be able to dig trenches.
• Must be able to withstand heat or coldness in buildings, attics or cooler units.
• Must be able to operate motorized cart.
• Must be able to sit, squat, and kneel for periods of time.

Salary & Benefits
Salary: Non-exempt hourly ranges $20.00 varying on experience
