Life Support Systems Technician II
Program, operate and maintain and monitor all marine and freshwater aquatic life
support systems including pumps, piping, filtration, disinfectant processes and control systems.
Operates, maintains and repairs building plumbing and piping.
Functions & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair water filters, ozone generation and treatment, chlorine
dosing equipment, UV sterilization and life support systems and their attendant computerized
controls.
Works with Maintenance Manager, Husbandry, Water Quality and Veterinary Staff to maintain an
environment conductive to the health and well-being of all animals within the WOW Collection.
Ensure adequate supplies of conditioned fresh and salt water for all animal enclosures.
Responsible for scheduling, updating, and providing quality assurance of the LSS preventative
maintenance program. Including: monitor all filtration systems and water parameters. Filter
cleaning (backwashes, cleaning filter baskets, etc.)
Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair chillers, boilers, water softeners and charcoal filtration
systems and their attendant piping and computerized controls.
Responsible for providing adequate means to fulfill repair maintenance for the Life Support
Systems by setting up contracts and maintaining adequate spare parts and special tools.
Work closely with the Maintenance Manager, Curator and Husbandry staff to perform standard
operating procedures and operation sequences for LSS systems, plumbing and piping.
Perform the repair and maintenance of pumps, controllers, generators, air compressors and
water purification equipment. Receive, maintain, and restock chemical inventories. Keep
operational data log on all water systems.
Mentors and trains less experienced staff in all aspects of the Life Support Systems.
Assist staff and visitors as needed in a pleasant, professional and courteous manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
Requires 3 year experience with large-scale aquatic life support and filtration systems preferably in a zoo
or aquarium. Must have a good understanding of pumps, filters (multiple types), protein skimmers, ozone
(production and dosing), ION exchange, RO/DI systems, Chlorine application, water quality parameters
and problem remediation (particularly as they apply to aquarium systems), flow dynamics, filtration
philosophies (eg. mechanical, chemical, biological) as well as knowledge of basic chemistry and physics.
Requires knowledge of automated controls, pneumatics, electro-mechanical and electro-optical devices
and methods. Requires ability to read blueprints, schematic drawings and diagrams, P&ID’s. Requires
good computer and professional communication skills, and the ability to operate all required office and
building equipment.
