The Life Support Systems Operator (LSSO) is a Technical Position, safety sensitive, essential, responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of the New York Aquarium’s Fresh-water and seawater systems and other related work as required. The LSSO is expected to perform high quality work in support of New York Aquarium’s mission.

Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

1. Installs, operates, monitors and ensures proper functioning of all equipment vital to the operation of animal exhibits, quarantine and holding and life support systems and exhibit water features (eg. pumps, valves, filters, ozone generators, UV sterilizers, backwashers, generators). Maintains efficent operation of backwash recovery system and water reclamation in order to reclaim at least 95% on marine systems. Prepares and maintains salt water batches and water transfers on large systems. Maintains proper water quality using sanitizers, ozone and other chemicals. Maintains proper water filtration for turbidity/clarity.
2. Performs PM tasks and affects necessary repairs on all life-support related equipment including, but not limited to: freshwater and seawater pumps, filters, heat exchangers, valves, pressure regulators and automation equipment, low voltage systems, ozone equipment, UV sterilizers, air prep units, blowers, building hardware, LSS plumbing, generators, and other duties as deemed necessary to maintain life support operations. Ensure tasks are accomplished and meet the quality standards.
3. Communicates daily with supervisor, plant engineering staff, co-workers, animal staff and laboratory staff with regard to LSS and water quality issues as they relate to animal health and exhibit function/appearance. Works closely with co-workers to ensure all scheduled and unscheduled water changes, transfers and tank-drop procedures are completed safely and efficiently.
4. Assists in the design and installation of new filtration systems. Interprets blue prints and equipment drawings.
5. Responsible for maintaining accurate records;generates work orders and daily log sheets in a neat and orderly fashion, uses computer, MS Office and MS Outlook.
6. Assists in other animal care areas as assigned.
7. Performs various troubleshooting techniques related to system problems and/or malfunctions, and responds to emergencies.
8. Assures safety of self, animals, co workers and visitors by observing safety guidelines around the animals, equipment and vehicles.
9. Utilizes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Material Data Sheets and makes recommendations to curator staff on compliance related issues.
10. Read, understand and utilize technical manuals and data regarding LSS Operations, methodology and equipment.
11. Attends team meetings and participates in developmental seminars (e.g remains current on job skills) and worships are required.
12. Ability to interact with the public and provide factual information on the local animal population or the Aquarium’s animal collection through personal knowledge and referring the question to the appropriate department.
13. Drives New York Aquarium vehicles to work related areas for field investigations and other local businesses and suppliers for correspondence and needed materials
14. Ability to conduct tours of all LSS spaces and present information to VIP’s in a clear and concise manner.

Skills & Experience

Knowledge & Skills

* Knowledge of safety rules and procedures applicable to the position and of occupational hazards and safety procedures.
* Knowledge of major water process filtration components and their application.
* Knowledge of assembly, operation, and repair of reciprocating compressors, centrifugal compressors, ozone generators and centrifugal pumps.
* Knowledge of hydraulic systems as they relate to water process, particularly for aquaculture and aquarium systems.
* Knowledge of plumbing practices, materials and tools as they relate to trade
* Knowledge of water quality testing as it relates to water process and purification systems, aquaculture systems and aquarium system.
* Knowledge of basic electrical theory, electrical components, and their application
* Knowledge of troubleshooting, and repair techniques and procedures for mechanical electrical and electronic equipment for water process equipment
* Knowledge of basic refrigeration equipment as it relates to trade
* Knowledge of how to oil, grease, clean and replace motors, bearings and other frictional wearing surfaces that are trade related
* Skill in the application of operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and control equipment as it relates to aquatic life support systems.
* Skill in plumbing materials, tools and techniques related to water process systems, aquarium or aquaculture systems
* Ability to train personnel
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
* Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
* Ability to use basic electrical test equipment proficiently
* Ability to follow oral and written instruction

Education & Experience

* High School Graduate or GED
* Six months experience in fields, such as aquarium life support, aquaculture, commercial water treatment and similar industry that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
* Experience in the maintenance of aquariums, aquatic life support systems and use of water quality testing equipment preferred

The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; and taste or smell.
