The Houston Zoo is looking for a mechanically inclined go-getter to join the LSS Water Quality Team in opening a brand new, first of its kind Galapagos exhibit, including a 190,000gal aquarium, 255,000gal Sea Lion habitat, and a 30,000gal Penguin habitat. All will have state-of-the-art LSS equipment, SCADA systems and automation. The Water Quality Tech position will be responsible for operation of these systems and other aquatic LSS throughout the Zoo, as well as preventative maintenance, diving opportunities, and coverage of the Water Quality Lab. The LSS Water Quality Team provides safe and healthy aquatic environments for terrestrial and non-terrestrial animals and maintains the physical integrity of zoo/aquarium facilities associated with aquatic animal habitats. Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

*Monitors water quality, clarity, and chemistry of aquatic exhibits.

*Conducts the preventive maintenance and repair of LSS equipment.

*Recommends and maintain the stock of required spare parts, tools, and test instruments.

*Understands water chemistry and how it relates to life support system operations.

*Troubleshoots and repairs life support systems and equipment.

*Knowledge of control systems to monitor and record data.

*Maintains system logs and records.

*Maintains the highest standard of work area cleanliness.

*Interface effectively with other departments to maintain the highest quality standards.

*Follows and maintains all safety policies and procedures.

*Maintenance diving on scuba and surface supplied air.

*Assist with the production of synthetic seawater for marine systems.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

*Interacts with Zoo guests and maintains the highest level of guest satisfaction.

*Contributes to saving animals in the wild through the reduction of waste, water and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protecting actions.

*Performs other duties as assigned

Skills & Experience

Knowledge & Skills

*Knowledge with diagnosing and repairing LSS equipment including ozone generators, pumps, heat exchangers, air compressors, and all types of filtration systems.

*Knowledge with pipe fitting utilizing PVC, CPVC, stainless steel, polyethylene and Teflon tubing.

*Excellent oral and written communications skills.

*Excellent critical thinking skills.

*Proficient at multitasking and rolling with the punches!

Education & Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); supplemented by two years’ experience in public zoo and aquarium life support systems or municipal water treatment .

Job Requirements

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 75lbs.
Ability to be on your feet and active (bending, reaching, grasping, pulling, pushing, etc.) for much of the work day.

Working Conditions

Our team works in all weather conditions at various locations on a 55 acre property.
