This position plans and directs the academic and technical operations of the Aquarium Science Program. Working collaboratively with the Director of Facilities, this position will plan and implement building and equipment maintenance.

The Director of Aquarium Science Program will be responsible for outreach and collaboration with academic and industry-wide entities and secondary and post-secondary partners (STEM) to further the mission of the college. This position provides coordination to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programing throughout Oregon Coast Community College’s service area.

Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

This position oversees the operation of the Aquarium Science Building which houses a variety of small, recirculating aquatic systems used for education along with support areas like water chemistry lab, kitchen, and salt water makeup and reclamation. The Director supervises full and part-time aquarists/student mentors and works with college administration to supervise teaching faculty.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

The director gives regular reports to the college board of education, the local advisory committee, and coordinates the yearly National Visiting Committee event.

    • Industry expertise to function in the aquatic animal husbandry field as curator skill and knowledge level.
    • Working knowledge of current technical job skill sets required to perform aquatic animal husbandry, aquatic life support, and marine interpretation activities.
    • Ability to direct the activities of instructors and supervise staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining.
    • Strong interpersonal skills that promote cooperative learning and working environments and staff.
    • Experience establishing student internship and practicum opportunities.
    • Ability to develop curriculum, write lesson plans, establish lesson objectives, and evaluate student learning/performance.

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

      • A Bachelor’s Degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Science, Biology or a related field of study
      • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the aquatic animal husbandry profession, of which 3 years were spent working as a departmental or program level manager.
      • Preferred Qualifications:
      • Master’s Degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Science, Biology or related field of study preferred.
      • AALSO Level III Life Support Operator certification
      • AALSO Level III Water quality technician certification.
      • Professional experience in post-secondary education
      • Bilingual – Spanish

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Work in an office environment with potential for interruptions and background noise.
  • Work in and around aquarium tanks and laboratories.
  • Visit tide pools, collect and transport aquatic animals in potentially dark, cold, and inclement weather.
Salary & Benefits
Salary: $85,788- $89,254 annually
