Serves as Head of the Facilities and Maintenance Department at the Waikiki Aquarium (WAQ). Reports to WAQ director. Supervises in-house team of blue colar personnel, and works closely with them in attainment of given goals.

Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

1. Participates in WAQ planning. Interacts with WAQ departments in the design, construction, maintenance of buildings, exhibits, operating systems. Attends weekly Dept. Heads Meetings. Provides recommendations regarding policies, procedures, etc.
2. Responsible for physical plant operation policy and procedures. Duties include preventative maintenance, repairs, construction work, trade work related to addressing facility emergencies or safety issues, and/or duties in support of construction projects.
3. Ensures that all mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems are functioning properly for the safety of all visitors, staff, and exhibit animals. On call 24/7/365 to organize immediate corrective actions as appropriate.
4. Provides prompt/immediate response to issues, situations and instructions, especially urgent or emergency matters.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

1. Resolves operational and administrative matters in accordance with current policies, procedures and directives as requested. Prompt/immediate response to issues, situations and instructions, especially urgent or emergency matters.
2. Plans, directs and evaluates programs and projects in support of the WAQ facilities that provide 24/7/365 life support to animals, engineering, construction, maintenance, operations, utilities, housekeeping, grounds, safety and security.
3. Plans, organizes, and coordinates with UH, Federal, State, and City agencies on construction and maintenance projects, including procurement and permitting.
4. Prepares invitations to bid, bid specifications, technical specifications or requests for quotations for department and contract work related to building, equipment and exhibit maintenance. Assists FO/AO in preparation of requisitions.
5. Selects and oversees the work of skilled trades and blue collar contractor personnel in WAQ projects. Monitors and ensures that results of any contract work meet cost, schedule and quality controls and bid and design specifications.
6. Advises supervisor promptly of the progress of projects assigned, anticipated problems, major policy changes expected affecting specialized area, and completion of projects assigned.
7. Responsible for OSHA/HiOSH safety and compliance, including written policies and procedures, coordinating training, and inspections.
8 Works closely with and takes direction from the UH Manoa Environmental, Health and Safety Office to develop and implement WAQ site-specific health and safety programs, hazardous materials awareness, and related staff training programs.
9. Responsible for Emergency Preparedness and Procedures, and scheduling staff training.
10. Responsible for Building Security Systems, Policies and Procedures – including electronic security systems, camera systems, and issuing keys to employees. On call 24/7/365 to respond promptly to security issues.
11. Oversees maintenance of all WAQ grounds, lawns, gardens and public areas to the highest standards for a major community and tourist attraction. Sets operating performance standards and monitors for compliance.
12. Researches current trends in materials, equipment and supplies applicable to the WAQ environment. Responsible for researching, developing and producing a departmental budget and monitoring expenditures for the efficient use of resources.
13. Maintains Facilities and Maintenance Department inventory of equipment, materials and supplies, and ensures adequate supply for WAQ operations. Makes recommendations for purchases outside of regular purchasing. Transports materials and equipment on and off-site.
14. Provides general staff support for WAQ special events, programs or functions. Typically to include assigning staff to assist in custodial duties, event preparation and breakdown, etc., most often during normal workday, but occasionally after hours.
15. Travels to various locations to attend meetings, visit contractors, pick up supplies, etc.
16. Interacts with WAQ staff, volunteers, students, visitors, etc., in a polite, courteous and professional manner.

Skills & Experience

Knowledge & Skills

1. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of auxiliary and/or facilities services as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
2. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with auxiliary and/or facilities services.
3. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
4. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
5. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
6. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software and database programs.
7. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Education & Experience

1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Civil Engineering, Management or Life Sciences and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for auxiliary and/or facilities services; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to travel independently to and from meetings, events and WAQ in a timely manner, fulfilled by possession of a valid Driver’s License (Class 3), or use of other means of transportation which meet position needs.
2. Able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds, independently or with assistance.
3. Able to use ladders, tools, power tools, and work in confined spaces.
4. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
