Life Support Technician
The Life Support Systems Technician oversees the activities of the Life Support Systems. The Life Support Systems Technician performs all aspects of work for the purpose of design, construction, preventative and routine maintenance, repair, and installation of animal health and life support systems, equipment, and materials. This position serves in a supervisory role over outside consultants/suppliers/contractors hired in a life support systems capacity.

Functions & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Priority 1 – Life Support Systems
• Collect, test, analyze, improve, and maintain water quality and levels at optimum conditions for the well-being of various zoo animal species and humans.
• Perform and/or coordinate inspections, repairs, maintenance, and cleaning of all life support equipment and animal wading and interactive pool areas.
• Assist with the operation and maintenance of an on-site water quality laboratory.
• Assist with developing and implementing concepts for new Life Support systems.
• Purchase life support system-related equipment, tools, chemicals, and materials.
• Prepare work plans using blueprints, sketches, schematics, and digital models.
Priority 2 – Collaboration
• Collaborate with Zookeepers on the life support needs of all zoo animals.
• Collaborate with internal departments on planning and installing new exhibits, projects, repairs, and trouble shooting.
• Coordinate and work cooperatively with external departmental contractors and vendors.
Priority 3 – Compliance
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, codes, and industry standards.
• Transport water samples to outside testing agencies when necessary.
• Record data and prepare assigned reports/records on Life Support Systems and facilities.
• Maintain records on Work Orders.
• Ensure compliance with the Zoo’s Outside Contractor Code of Conduct for departmental contractors.
• Compose and maintain accurate documentation.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
• Other assistance, as designated by the Director of LSS, to support the overall goals of the department and organization. DZCA retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
• Acts as a good steward of the DZCA’s resources.
• This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations.
Skills & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
• Requires minimum of 2-years’ experience in fresh and saltwater aquatic life support systems. One year of fresh and saltwater practical lab experience, and experience working in an accredited zoo or aquarium facility are strongly preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and/or special skills
• Working knowledge of closed loop water systems; handling a variety of aquatic chemicals; of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to construct structures and make repairs; PVC plumbing and design; and the ability to read and communicate using manuals, plans, shop drawings, specifications, digital models, and maps.
• Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite are necessary.
• Requires excellent customer service, organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks. Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Education & Experience
• AALSO Level 1 Operator and AALSO Level 1 Water Quality Certifications on hire or within one year.
