Essential Functions

Life Support Technician I, II, III

Life Support Technician I
Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting with operation, maintenance and repair of the life support, building, and mechanical systems at the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Education/Training Requirements:
High school diploma or GED with training or certification as an aquatic life support technician, building controls technician, electrician, or other recognized trade or the equivalent.
Essential Duties:
1. Follows scheduled routine for LSS rounds and mechanical checks.
2. Maintains familiarity with all aspects of LSS including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
3. Visually monitors water quality in habitats and aquarium systems.
4. Assists with maintenance of animal life support systems (LSS).
5. Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools and test equipment used in daily activities.
6. Assists in the fabrication and repair of exhibits.
7. Assists with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of major plant equipment.
8. Must be fully capable of reading technical drawings, technical specification and written repair/maintenance procedures with minimum supervision.
9. Works a rotating shift, an on-call schedule, and/or overtime as needed.
10. Supports the maintenance of the grounds, roof, sidewalks, and parking in safe and clean condition.
11. Works with other relevant departments to ensure that exhibit galleries are always clean, and well maintained.
12. Works with the entire operations team to ensure that all outside trafficable areas are safe and free from snow and ice. Shovels snow and dispenses ice melt and/or grit as required.
13. With supervisor’s approval, assists other Departments with mechanical tasks.
14. Keeps proper records in accordance with ASLC policies and permits.
15. Maintains familiarity with SDS system, hazardous communications, and emergency response.
16. Maintains a valid driver’s license.
17. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
18. Complies with all policies, procedures, and programs, demonstrating commitment to values and mission of the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Other Duties:
19. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Life Support Technician II
Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting with operation, maintenance and repair of the life support, building, and mechanical systems at the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Education/Training Requirements:
High school diploma or GED and completion of an Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) certificate or training, or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade, and two years’ experience in a similar position or the equivalent.
Essential Duties:
1. Follows scheduled routine for LSS rounds and mechanical checks.
2. Maintains familiarity with all aspects of LSS including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, performing diagnostic and repair planning.
3. Visually monitors water quality in habitats and aquarium systems, assisting with analysis and planning.
4. Assists with maintenance of animal life support systems (LSS).
5. Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools and test equipment used in daily activities.
6. Assists in the fabrication and repair of exhibits.
7. Assists with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of major plant equipment.
8. Assists with the coordination of volunteer/intern activities, planning, and supervising as needed.
9. Must be fully capable of reading technical drawings, technical specification and written repair/maintenance procedures with minimum supervision.
10. Works a rotating shift, an on-call schedule, and/or overtime as needed.
11. Supports the routine preventive and breakdown maintenance on all aspects of the ASLC building and its operating systems. Including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building construction.
12. Supports the maintenance of the grounds, roof, sidewalks, and parking in safe and clean condition.
13. Works with other relevant departments to ensure that exhibit galleries are always clean, and well maintained.
14. Works with the entire operations team to ensure that all outside trafficable areas are safe and free from snow and ice. Shovels snow and dispenses ice melt and/or grit as required.
15. With supervisor’s approval, assists Research Departments with mechanical tasks.

Life Support Technician III
Summary:
This position is responsible for leading the operation, maintenance and repair of the life support, building, and mechanical systems at the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Education/Training Requirements:
Associates Degree in Aquarium Science, Marine Ecosystems, or equivalent and completion of Aquatic Animal Life Support Operator (AALSO) Level II certificate, or training or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade and four years’ experience in a similar position or the equivalent. Supervisory experience preferred.
Essential Duties:
1. Assists with supervision of personnel matters within the Life Support & Facilities Division. Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, and delegates authority. Makes personnel recommendations to the Operations Director.

3. Maintains familiarity with all aspects of LSS including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, coordinating diagnostic and repair planning.
