The Aquarium maintenance Technician is responsible for daily preventative maintenance, equipment monitoring, maintenance and repair of life support system equipment, designing and building or repairing exhibits ,installing new equipment, and basic building maintenance. This position reports to the animal care manager.

Functions & Responsibilities

•Maintain clean and safe work environments.
• Maintain tools and inventory parts in a neat and orderly way.
•Monitors, records and maintains LSS logs of day-to-day, monthly, quarterly and yearly operations
• Operate, maintain, repair and install including but not limited to: filters, pumps, foam fractionators, ultraviolet sterilizers, ozone generators and monitors, chemical dosing equipment, heat exchangers, electrical components and HVAC components
• Ability to interpret water quality results and make changes to LSS equipment as needed
• Follow instructions and carry out projects and tasks assigned by the animal care manager
• Maintain effective written and verbal communications and exhibit respectful behavior in these communications.
• Follow State and Federal regulatory requirements and industry standards.
• Assist with developing and implementing standard operating procedures and preventive maintenance schedules
• Arrive for shift on time and ready to work.
• Occasional need for afterhour emergencies
•Ability to problem solve and act proactively vs reactively
• Diving to maintain or repair exhibits
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience

Knowledge & Skills

•High school diploma or equivalent required Bachelor’s degree in related discipline
preferred.
• 1 year of hands-on experience operating LSS equipment in an aquarium/ zoo setting or 2-
3 years of experience with similar skills such as mechanical repair, plumbing, or electrical
systems
• Aquatic Animal Life Support Certification is preferred
• Ability to interpret water quality results
• Experience with tools/power tools and machinery
• basic of electrical knowledge
• Must have reliable transportation
• Knowledge of pumps, water quality, and life support systems components as well as the knowledge to maintain and repair these components
• Ability to lift 75 lbs
• Aquatic or reptile animal care is plus
• SCUBA certification is preferred.
•Effective written and oral communication skills
• Ability to follow time lines and complete projects in a timely manner
• Ability to read blueprints, mechanical drawings, and other diagrams is preferred
•Must be flexible and have the ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment
•Maintain a positive attitude with your peers as well as with the public.
•Ability to problem solve, think ahead and plan.
• Assist animal care team with animal procedures including transports.

• Compensation based on skills starting at $20/hr
