Operation of Life Support Systems throughout the zoo, equipment maintenance and repair, and basic water quality testing.

Functions & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Understand water chemistry reports and their relationship to Life Support, work closely with Animal Care staff and Construction staff, perform inspections, preventative maintenance tasks, cleaning and repair of all Life Support equipment.

Skills & Experience

Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of pumps (centrifugal and peristaltic), filters (sand, bead, drum), UV sterilizers, ozone generators, and automated control systems. Water quality in aquariums. PVC plumbing. Knowledge and ability to use power tools.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences preferred.

Physical Requirements

Able to move/lift 75 pounds, climb ladders, work in tight areas, ride a bicycle.

Working Conditions

Both indoor and outdoor in typical Southern California weather.

Salary & Benefits

Salary: $28.19/hour. *This is a civil service exempt, at-will position. The incumbent will not accrue any civil service tenure or contractual rights in such position. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for employment and have received a conditional job offer from the Los Angeles Zoo will be required to complete a criminal background investigation which includes fingerprinting. In the event that the job applicant fails to participate with the criminal background investigation or fails to satisfactorily complete or pass the criminal background investigation, the applicant's conditional job offer will be rescinded or revoked and his or her consideration for employment will be terminated.
