We are seeking a dynamic Water Quality Technician to join our team. This position works under the supervision of the Curatorial Staff as a member of the Wellbeing team. The Water Quality Technician supports effective and efficient animal care by performing chemical and biological testing of aquatic exhibit systems and by contributing to the overall goals of the assigned team. This role requires strong analytical skills, the ability to multitask in a dynamic environment, and a collaborative approach to supporting animal wellbeing.
Functions & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Conducts comprehensive water quality testing on all aquatic systems, including but not limited to salinity, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total copper, ORP, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, chlorine, magnesium, and calcium.
- Calibrates electrodes and probes; performs routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, minor equipment repairs, and maintains overall laboratory cleanliness and organization.
- Conducts system bacterial analysis through monitoring and testing Enterococcus and coliform levels.
- Communicates water quality results effectively with Life Sciences and Life Support staff; assists with preparation of routine data reports.
- Maintains and monitors therapeutic medication levels in quarantine systems, assists with cycling new systems, and monitors pH stabilization.
- Demonstrates strong multitasking and time management skills by efficiently managing multiple testing schedules, reporting requirements, and competing priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Must be a self‑starter with exceptional time management skills, able to prioritize tasks effectively while meeting multiple deadlines.
- Works collaboratively as a dependable team member, contributing positively to a cooperative and respectful work environment.
- Assists with planning short‑ and long‑term water quality goals, including supplies, logistics, and resource management.
- Conducts routine inventory management and ordering laboratory supplies.
- Provides supportive assistance with animal health and veterinary activities as assigned, under the direction of Veterinary and Wellbeing staff.
Skills & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
- Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a four‑year degree at the discretion of WOW.
- Preferred minimum of two (2) years of experience in water quality analysis, including knowledge of aquatic water parameters, life support systems, and the ability to perform all aspects of water testing.
- AALSO Level 1 Water Quality Certification preferred.
- Working knowledge of basic chemistry, aquatic water quality testing, and the nitrogen cycle and its effects on aquatic animals; familiarity with basic microbial testing methods.
- Proficiency in the use and maintenance of standard water quality laboratory equipment, including probes, spectrophotometers, colorimeters, refractometers, and total dissolved solids (TDS) meters.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Physical Requirements
- Requires walking or standing approximately 75% of the time, sitting approximately 10% of the time, and forward bending or crouching approximately 15% of the time.
- Applicant must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and possess manual dexterity for handling small objects and laboratory equipment.
- Requires proficiency with personal computer hardware and contemporary software, including Microsoft Office products.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions in holding areas, exhibit spaces, and mechanical rooms where spaces may be tight, as well as in office environments with climate control and appropriate lighting.
- Immunizations may be required depending on the animal collection, which may include TB testing.
Salary & Benefits
Salary: $20 per hour
